The European Horse Network (EHN) published a new website, with quick access to the goal, the members, position papers and other documents and reports of meetings, including meetings with members of the European Parliament.
This is also important for FEIF, as the latest position paper has been proposed by FEIF, concerning what is known as Blood Mares but officially the production of Equine Chorionic Gonadotrophin (eCG). The paper supports the position FEIF has taken last year, condemning misuse of pregnant mares by taking massive amounts of blood to be used in industrial breeding, mainly pig breeding, also in Iceland.
The practice of extracting blood from pregnant mares for purely commercial purposes is of ethical concern as it often results in the mistreatment of mares on so-called blood farms. EHN calls for clear regulations, transparency and rigorous enforcement to ensure the welfare, good treatment, and handling of these mares, to prevent stress and injury risks. Additionally, strict rules on blood collection should be developed based on the recommendations of the World Organisation for Animal Health.
FEIF is one of the founding members of EHN.
