From 1 April 2026, the use of the Pelham bit will be prohibited in sports competitions. The Pelham bit has previously been banned in breeding assessments, and this extension to sport follows ongoing welfare evaluations. Among the concerns are repeated observations of lesions and sores associated with the use of this bit. The decision reflects FEIF’s continued commitment to safeguarding the well-being of the horse.
In addition, new rules regarding nosebands will come into effect on the same date. A minimum space of at least 1.5 cm will be required between the noseband and the front of the horse’s nose (nasal midline). Previously, this requirement applied only to Hanoverian/drop nosebands; from 1 April 2026, it will also apply to English and combined nosebands. Consequently, all nosebands must allow a minimum distance of 1.5 cm. This adjustment also brings FEIF regulations in line with the standards of the FEI regarding noseband tightness.
Both regulations enter into force on 1 April 2026.
