Earlier this month, FEIF and Baendasamtök Íslands (BÍ), signed a new, updated agreement concerning WorldFengur (WF). Amongst other things, the updates in this agreement include the configuration of the WF Board, financial arrangement and the relationship between national FEIF member associations and the ownership of data. This year WF is celebrating 25 years since its inauguration in 2001. WorldFengur is a comprehensive databank, which aims to record every pure Icelandic horse that is born (and that has died) in a unique database, which is the envy of many an international equine breed association. Most members of national Icelandic horse associations worldwide have free access to WF as part of their membership benefits. There you can look up the outcome of all breeding assessments and some sport competitions, as well as the full pedigree of your horse, going back several generation, until ‘records began’. It is always fun to check how closely related your horse is to that of the other Icelandics near you. But there is so much more: the suitability of your horse as a breeding horse, is measured by the BLUP index, which is updated every year. The BLUP also serves as a predictive tool as to the quality and range of gaits you can expect from a foal that is born. Then there is the ‘mating’ tool, where you can predict the likely gait-distribution, see the range of possible colours, and look up a list of Icelandic horse names and their meaning in several languages. WF is a hugely important source of information for all Icelandic horse breeders and riders world wide.
